Muhunthan Paramesvaran is new Chair of influential immigration law committee

The Law Society has appointed our partner Muhunthan Paramesvaran as the Chair of its influential Immigration Law Committee. Muhunthan took up his appointment this month.

On taking up the appointment Muhunthan said;

I am honoured to have been appointed chair of the law society immigration law committee. I have served on the committee for a number of years which exists to review and promote improvements in immigration and asylum law, practice and procedure.  It is a critical time to be taking on this role as the challenges facing the profession at the moment are unprecedented.  In my in tray at the moment:

• Nationality and Borders Bill – this seeks to criminalise Asylum seekers based on method of arrival and grant different status on this basis, raise the evidential threshold Asylum seekers have to meet, introduce off-shore processing, restrict appeal rights, reintroduce detained accelerated appeals and introduce personal fines for those conducting litigation.

• Judicial Review and Courts Bill-this seeks to introduce prospective only remedies, abolish judicial review of Upper Tribunal refusals of permission to appeal and generally fetter judicial discretion.

• The unfolding crisis in Afghanistan and the related immigration and humanitarian issues
