Caseworkers

A caseworker role is the usual entry point for those wishing to qualify as solicitors with us. Caseworkers support the work of solicitors and learn knowledge and skills whilst working on cases under supervision. Senior Caseworkers will be given their own caseload of work. Two years working as a caseworker meets the requirement for Qualifying Work Experience under the SQE route to qualification.

Trainee Solicitors - Period of Recognised Training route

Those who have completed their LPC or are studying part-time for their LPC will be considered for a Trainee Solicitor role after successful completion of 6 months as a caseworker. They will undertake a two year Period of Recognised Training and qualify thereafter as a solicitor. Our Trainee Solicitors usually work in one of our three departments specializing early in their career.

Trainee Solicitors - Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeships

We are committed to widening access to the legal profession and with the University of Law are able to offer funded Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeships for those seeking to qualify under the SQE route. These involve four days of work and one day of study each week with the course and exam fees funded partly by us and partly by the Department of Education. The apprenticeships last 2.5 years.

To be offered a Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship you will normally have worked for us as a caseworker for at least 6 months and an offer will depend on funding and places being available at the University of Law.

Solicitor Apprenticeships

From time to time we also offer a 6 year Solicitor Apprenticeship for those with A Levels who have not studied or are not proposing to study at university. These are offered in collaboration with the University of Law and involve four days of work and one day of study each week with the course and exam fees funded partly by us and partly by the Department of Education. These apprenticeships start with a mix of administrative and legal work in the first three years before following a similar structure to the Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship in the final three years.

Solicitors

We are always on the look out for those already qualified as solicitors who would be interested in joining us. If you specialise in one of our areas of law, are passionate about justice, and would like to work in a mixed legal aid and private practice we may well have a place for you. Our solicitors become Associate Solicitors after 3 years of qualification and Senior Associate Solicitors after 8 years of qualification. 30% of our solicitors are Partners.

Support Staff

We value our non lawyer support staff and provide careers to those in IT, accounts, practice management, secretarial, reception, and other administrative roles.

As an alternative to a caseworker role the Legal Aid Biller role is a common entry point for a legal career. Billers often move on to become caseworkers after 12 months in a billing role.

Work Experience and Internships

We have a long-standing commitment to offering short work experience placements to students considering a career in law. We aim to ensure as far as possible that these opportunities are reserved for those who would otherwise have limited access to work experience in the legal profession and those from backgrounds currently under-represented in the legal profession.

With this in mind we run the majority of our work experience programmes in partnership with local state schools and other organisations, including educational charity Inspire!, Queen Mary University of London’s 93% Club, and Micro Rainbow International’s Fellowship Programme.

We do not offer unpaid internships. Each year we offer a 6 week paid internship through the 10,000 Black Interns programme.

Equality and Diversity

As an employer, we aim to develop a workforce that is representative of the society we serve. We seek to treat all employees and job applicants equally and fairly without regard to age, disability, gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation, trade union membership, caring responsibilities or any other factors not relevant to their ability to do the job.

We aim to attract the best employees, drawn from the widest possible labour market. We aim to create a working environment which is free from discrimination, harassment and bullying and which respects the diverse backgrounds and beliefs of our employees.
