Nusrat Uddin appeared at the Public Law Project’s Discrimination Law for Public Lawyers training course this week. The workshop examined using discrimination arguments in judicial review and County Court proceedings, and provided a forum for lawyers, advisers, caseworkers, advocates and policy people to discuss the frontiers of discrimination law.

Nusrat discussed identifying discrimination issues for strategic litigation and looked at how risks in litigation needs to be weighed up against client’s other risks or ongoing legal matters. She also spoke about the need to prioritise self-care when working in this area of law avoid discrimination fatigue.

She used her own experience in the strategic litigation case of K and AM v SSHD [2018] EWHC 2951 (Admin), challenging the discriminatory cuts made by the Home Office to subsistence monies paid to support asylum seeking victims of trafficking and modern slavery. She highlighted the importance of utilising evidence from across the sector, from NGOs, academics, charities and support organisations. The full programme can be downloaded here.
