Wilson Solicitors LLP warmly welcomes the report of the Inquiry into the use of Immigration Detention in the UK produced by the cross party Parliamentary Group on Refugees, chaired by Sarah Teather MP. We act for many victims of immigration detention. Many of our clients have been detained for months and sometimes years under immigration powers. We strongly support the key recommendation of the report that there should be a time limit of 28 days on the length of time anyone can be held in immigration detention. We would regard 28 days as the absolute maximum. We call upon the government to implement the report’s key recommendation as a matter of urgency.Congratulations to Kay Everett a Partner in our firm, for giving evidence to the Inquiry. Kay was able to draw on her enormous practical experience in acting for immigration detainees. She is extensively quoted in the report’s account of the acute failures of legal representation in detention. We are extremely pleased that the report exposes the poor quality of legal advice that is such a common feature in the plight of immigration detainees (see especially page 46-47).
